Turkey's tobacco market, the eighth largest in the world and valued this month at around US$9bn (€6bn) in consumer price turnover by British American Tobacco (BAT), has contracted by 5% over the past year following the imposition of a nationwide smoking ban.rnIn 2007, some 107.46bn sticks were sold, according to the Turkish Tobacco and Alcohol Market Regulatory Agency (TAPDK), whereas in the first ten months of 2008, 90.11bn cigarettes were consumed.rnSince a ban on smoking in enclosed public areas was introduced in May 2008, tobacco consumption has decreased month by month, with 520mn fewer sticks consumed in July 2008 than in the same month of 2007, a drop of 457mn in August, and a total of 9.39bn sticks consumed in October 2008 compared to 10.44bn sticks in October 2007.
