Changes in technology, education, and automation have lead to a younger, more highly educated demographic, with an increased proportion of women, working at sewage treatment plants. The purpose of this paper is to outline the specific risks relating to pregnancy and breastfeeding (lactation) for women working at sewage treatment plants, and some practical steps that employers and employees can take to protect them (and their foetuses and babies) from harm. It also discusses some tools that Sydney Water has started to implement.
