Bioreactor landfills: progress continues

There continues to be a high level of interest in bioreactor landfills in the US, with new projects announced each year. While we recognize the trend away from the burial of organics in much of Europe, bioreactor landfills have the potential to improve landfill performance in countries with environmental policies that allow for the burial of degradable organics as well as landfills established prior to the recent policy change in Europe. Specific research needs were identified in a previous editorial (Vol. 23, No.7). In this editorial, we would like to provide a brief update on the state of bioreactor landfills. Sessions on bio-reactor landfills continue to be a dominant theme at solid waste conferences, and there is a lot of excitement amongst researchers, regulators and practitioners.
