The production of biodegradable waste in Cyprus

Cyprus is a small country located in the eastern Mediterranean. Many environmental issues, including waste management were not extensively addressed until the entry of the country to the European Union in 2004. Since then, very rapid and concerted efforts are being made to harmonize local with European regulations and legislation and mitigate against potential environmental and health hazards. One of the most significant issues for the European and Cypriot environmental authorities is waste management. The current tendency in the countries of the EU and other developed countries, is to maximize the utilization of natural resources by increasing efficiency, development of new technologies towards further exploitation of the available sources and utilization of waste through material or energy recovery.
