Municipal solid waste management in Dar Es Salaam city, Tanzania

Tanzania, one of the Eastern African countries, hosts the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro, with an elevation of approximately 5900 m, as well as the breathtaking islands of Zanzibar and Pemba in the Indian Ocean. The capital city of Tanzania, Dar Es Salaam, is located on the eastern side of the country along the Indian Ocean with a population of more than 43 million. The city has a tropical climate with a temperature averaging 27 ℃ and mean annual rainfall of over 1000 mm. It is the largest city in Tanzania and a centre for government administration, commerce and industries comprising three municipalities: Ilala, Kinondoni, and Temeke. Dar Es Salaam is a growing city to which people from different parts of Tanzania move in view of the wide range of socio-economic, cultural and political activities. The population growth rate corresponds to approx. 1% per annum. The constantly increasing population has led to the production of larger amounts of solid waste causing serious problems to the urban environment.
