摘要

Nowadays, it is not an overstatement that municipal, as well as industrial, waste management has been identified with recovery of either materials or energy. It has been realized that through recovery several environmental and economic benefits arise and therefore this prospect is strongly supported by current legislation. Naturally, the large number of different waste types and the variety of their characteristics/properties create a really large field of research, in which scientists, experts, engineers and authorities have to work. Taking into account the fact that national or regional conditions can greatly influence the outcome of this work, it becomes clear that energy and/or materials recovery from municipal and industrial waste cannot be based on universal or one-track procedures.
