Withdrawal of the circular economy package: A wasted opportunity or a new challenge?

In July 2014 the European Commission made a proposal for amending several directives on waste, corrected in the following September. With this so-called circular economy package the Commission intended to create 180,000 new jobs and to make Europe more competitive as scarce resources are saved. However, on 16 December 2014 the new European Commission stepped back from this plan and withdrew the circular economy package. What would have been the advantages and disadvantages? In which fields the new, already announced, proposal should be extended and improved?
