In April 2015 the International Waste Working Group and Venice International University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding which provides the basis for the establishment of the new Sustainable Waste Management International Academy-SWAMIA. Venice International University (VIU) is an International Consortium of Universities of different countries, with high qualified experiences and competences in education and advanced training on sustainable development issues that aims at promoting exchange and capacity building on global key issues. Both organizations, IWWG and VIU have been successfully collaborating since 2013 for the organization of workshops and doctoral schools on waste management. In July 2014, a summer school on Sustainable Landfilling and Final Sink has been jointly organized and in November 2014 another doctoral school on Anaerobic Digestion was carried out. Under the umbrella of the new Academy at least 2 doctoral schools per year, workshops, professional trainings and research activities on waste management issues shall be organized. IWWG is in charge of the scientific coordination of the Academy. The first scientific coordinator is Prof. Anders Lagerkvist from Lulea University (Sweden), who was elected in the framework of the recent Managing Board meeting in Venice.
