Issues on medical waste management research

Medical waste (MW) is a type of solid waste that has attracted a lot of research attention during the past decades. More than one term has been used in the literature to describe these wastes, including "health care", "hospital", "infectious waste" and "pharmaceutical waste". Strictly speaking, the last two types of wastes are components of the hazardous fraction of medical wastes. According to Scopus (accessed September 2015), since 1970, a total of 898 publications have included the term "medical waste" in their titles, 797 have included the term "hospital waste", and 150 publications have included the term "health care waste".
