The evolution of solid waste management in Lagos State, Nigeria

Solid Waste Management became an issue in Lagos since the early 1970s, when the oil boom, compounded by the emerging industrialization and urbanization, resulted in high volumes of waste which became difficult for Local Government Councils to manage. The Lagos State Refuse Disposal Board (LSRDB) was established in April 1977 under Edict 9 of 1977 and, after some changes, it became the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) in 1999.
