Waste management in developing countries: including bottom-up-driven informal sectors

In poorer regions of the world solid waste generation is less than 0.5 kg person~(-1) day~(-1) which is considerably lower than in rich countries. Population density may be high in the towns and, despite this modest amount per person, waste often turns into an insurmountable problem for municipalities. Often less than half the generated waste may be collected, not to speak of proper treatment and disposal. The likely causes are poor economy and management.
