Underground engineering in the Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is rather small landlocked country in central Europe with higher population density in the inhabited area. In terms of morphology our country cannot be classed neither as mountainous nor flat land. There is a long tradition of ore mining that goes back to the early Middle Ages, and it is no accident that the origin of the famous work of Georgius Agricola from the beginning of the 16th century called "De re metallica libri XII" is connected with extensive silver mining in the Czech town of Jachymov. Even outside the field of mining we can state that there are remarkable underground works that were created on the Czech territory. As an example can be used Rudolf's water gallery created by the Emperor Rudolf II between 1582 and 1593 - it has a length of 1102 m and still serves to conduct water into the ponds in park Kralovska obora in Prague.
