A single tube bi-directional road tunnel, the longest in Korea with a length of 5057 m and two lanes, is to be constructed in Baehooryung area as part of Korea National road 46. It is a single tube tunnel including service tunnel with cross passages at every 180 m interval along its full length connecting both tunnels. The longitudinal slope and traffic speed of the tunnel are 1.4% and 80 km/h, respectively. In this project, there are two major design considerations, which are safety from tunnel fire in operation stage and road extension work in uncertain and not in the near future. One more tunnel is supposed to be constructed at the location of the service tunnel for proposed road extension to four lanes (two one-way tunnels) in uncertain future. The tunnel plan focused on its safety from fire and the road extension work. Due to the tunnel length, traffic direction and uncertainty about extension, the fully transverse ventilation system with spacious roadway shoulder width and service tunnel are adopted for this tunnel.
