In congested urban areas, new tunnel excavation work adjacent to a line (or row) of loaded piles, regarded as a deep wall in the plain-strain conditions for the existing building, has often occurred due to a lack of space. In general, soil-structure interaction is commonly divided into two groups (Katzenbach et al., 2003): (a) structures supported by the ground (SSG), e.g. building structures; underpinnings; bridge structures; offshore structures and storage-tank structures, and (b) ground supported by structures (GSS), e.g. earth-retaining structures; tunnels and buried structures. This study concerns a link between the SSG case (a pile) and the GSS case (the tunnel construction) in soft ground.
