GISRUK (GIS Research UK) 2013

The GISRUK conference series has now been running for a number of years - 2013 marks two decades since the first conference was held in Keele in 1993 - and this year the University of Liverpool was the host. In that time period, the nature of GIS research has changed and the application areas have expanded notably. What has perhaps remained similar over the years is the academic nature of the conference - it is essentially a forum for both pure and applied GIS research - and possibly also the emphasis on being a supportive environment for younger (or early career) researchers. The GISRUK conferences are characterised by a large proportion of PhD students gaining early experience in presenting papers, as well as postdoctoral researchers, alongside more 'mature' researchers, such as this report contributor. The 2013 meeting was no exception to this. Although not explicitly a planning conference, there were a number of subjects covered that would be of relevance to planners and policy makers, which will be set out below.
