HOLISTIC APPROACH

Roughly 10 years ago, the cultivation of tobacco in Greece was believed by some to be dead. That was the year when Greek tobacco was "decoupled" from European Union subsidies. A decade later, the country finds itself in the middle of a severe economic crisis. Yet, amazingly, tobacco is still being grown in Greece, with annual production hovering at an average of 30,000 tons over the past six years, according to data provided by the Greek tobacco company Seke. The crop has proved to be a worthy target of significant investments. Amid a challenging business environment in which many industrial activities have been negatively affected, Seke has taken a proactive and holistic approach, investing in tobacco production and processing to secure the future of tobacco cultivation in Greece.
