The former Ethiopian health minister Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who was appointed on May 23 as director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), had hardly gotten his feet under his new desk when Japan Tobacco International (JTI) was calling on him to scrutinize the organization's current practices. JTI was almost certainly speaking for most people within the tobacco industry and some within the tobacco control community when it called for the WHO to move on from its ideology-driven past.
