The Mediator and The Fog of Peace are two volumes about peacemaking in times of change. The biography of Martti Ahtisaari spans the late Cold War and the sudden end of bipolarity, whereas Jean-Marie Guehenno's memoirs of his time in the UN encompass the further dispersion of global power in the 2000s. Both these volumes are reflections on the practical experience of international diplomacy at a time when the multilateral architecture shifted from being primarily concerned with wars between states to wars within them, and the variety of cross-border threats these raise.
