Defence Acquisition for the Twenty-First Century

'The basic assumptions on which everything in the current acquisition system is based are flawed at a fundamental level' (p. 74). This is the strong central argument put forward in Defence Acquisition for the Twenty-First Century by editors Bernard Jenkin, Chris Donnelly and David McOwat. Given that the 'defence acquisition system is no longer compatible with today's defence budget and so is in an impossible mess' (p. 3), they call for 'a completely new approach to defence acquisition' (p. 1) -proposing to 'stimulate [an] evolutionary leap' and 'encourage a creative learning culture within the community responsible for [British] security' (p. 26). As such, the book's first three chapters, co-authored by its editors, seek to identify the required 'principles of acquisition … for the UK's security in the early twenty-first Century' (p. 26).
