Colombia: peace negotiations begin

In October 2012, Colombian government negotiators met representatives of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in Norway. Though an earlier attempt at a peaceful settlement of the long-running insurgency failed in 2002, Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos was reported as saying that this time there is 'a real opportunity to end the conflict'.
