Present Status of Recycling of Plastics

There are three methods for changing waste plastics into new resources, in addition to reuse: recycling, use of raw materials, and heat recovery. Of 976 tons of waste plastics generated in 1999, 452 tons was renewed as new resources through the above-mentioned three methods. The amount of products produced from plastic container packages under to Container Packaging Re- cycling Law, which started recently in April, 2000, was only 15.3 tons; the amount of packages taken back for production of new products also remained as low as 6.7 tons.
