Joseph Bulso, who patented a number of technologies that were vital to the development of two-piece cans, died aged 88 on 21 January. During the 1970s, Bulso's Ohio-based company Redicon Corporation designed cupping and forming systems used for the high-speed manufacture of D&I cans and end shells. He also designed tooling for the manufacture of the tapered steel food cans that are still commonly used in the fish canning industry. More recently, Bulso was working on reseala-ble beverage end designs. Redicon Corporation was later merged into what is now Stolle Machinery, a world leading manufacturer of D&I canmaking lines. With more than 50 patents to his name, Bulso was widely regarded as the 'father' of the two-piece can as the industry knows it. While cans using film-laminated coatings are only now becoming widely accepted, Bulso was working towards their introduction during the 1990s.
