Chair of the discussion group Ruth Fischer of R2 Consulting (Contoocook, NH) welcomed everyone and gave a brief description of the discussion group as one being focused on a variety of issues pertaining to professionalism in technical services. The discussion during the mid-winter meeting in Philadelphia centered on the appropriate roles for copy catalogers compared to those of professional catalogers. During the annual conference, the meeting's topic was in part an outgrowth of management issues raised in January and in recognition of just how important inspired management is in the world of rapid change in today's library environment. Fisher noted that many librarians have been promoted into positions with management components without ever having any real formal training (or experience) in managing per se. Many excellent professional librarians are promoted to management-level positions simply because they are very good at their job, not necessarily because they are good at managing.
