Digital libraries are complex systems that are more than just digital versions of their physical counterparts. There are digital libraries of different sizes serving different needs. There are digital libraries with specific printed materials such as newspapers, subject-specific libraries such as geographic data repositories, and digital libraries containing cultural heritage materials. In addition to holding massive amounts of content, digital libraries must have user-friendly interfaces and sophisticated search capabilities to help users find what they are looking for within the ever-growing volume of digital library content. Digital libraries holding cultural heritage materials also require preservation functionality as born-digital materials become the only version being created.
