地盤工学における試験施工の役割

Trial construction has often been conducted in geo technical engineering and those purposes are either to check the performance of the constructed structures or to develop new construction technologies. Here in this arti cle, the role of trial construction is reviewed based on the author's previous experiment. The author introduced his own experience on the development of sheet-pile method for soft ground for the purpose of its cost reduction in which a series of trial constructions were successfully con ducted. Finally, it was concluded that the trial construction is very important for not only developing the new technol ogies but also upgrading infrastructural construction.%“Full scale behavior is the most important in geotechnical engineering．”とかつて私が留学していた米国ヒューストン大学の故Mike O’Neill教授（Deep Foundations の世界的な研究者）がよく私にこう話していた。その頃私はどちらかというと解析的な研究に従事していたため，あまりその言葉には興味を示さなかった記憶がある。しかしその後，帰国し数々の実際問題解決の業務に携わる中で，そのことばが度々浮かんできた。
