The subject of airfield communica-tions has been touched on several times in this column, but it's time to write an entire column dedicated to it. For obvious safety reasons, any winch operation needs very reliable communications between the winch, launch point, and rope retrieve vehicle. There is less need for communications between the pilot and winch, which will surprise some.
