As of January 1st, 2011, 20,520 ships (1,000 gt and over) with a total of 824 million dwt were controlled by OECD countries representing a dwt share of 67.3 per cent of the world merchant fleet, a further increase from the 760 million dwt one year earlier. Tonnage figures for 2011 indicate that OECD countries controlled large shares of the world deadweight tonnage in the container, bulk, and tanker segments (80.3, 68.1, and 62.9 per cent, respectively).
