China is looking at using liquefied natural gas (LNG), a cleaner energy source with better economics, as bunker fuel in the future years. China Changjiang National Shipping (Group) (CSC) has announced plans to modify some ships used in inland rivers from using gasoil to a hybrid of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and gasoil. "Cost saving of 20% can be achieved if we use LNG-gasoil hybrid power," CSC said. The delivery price of bunker gasoil to inland river's ships is about CNY 9,100/tonne in the first half of April, while the same price of LNG to ships is CNY 5,300/tonne. Assuming a 70% calorific value conversion rate, CNY 1,070/tonne can be saved, ICIS Cl research showed. I was told CSC has formed a strategic alliance with PetroChina to carry out the modifications.
