Insensible to its own history, let alone to the history of capitalism, and infatuated with mathematical modeling, professional economics has brushed off its failure to notice the development of the most serious economic crisis for more than 70 years. This remarkable intellectual disaster invites the question of how a discipline enjoying considerable prestige and resources (including its own, admittedly somewhat ersatz Nobel Prize) should have got into such a lamentable condition.
