Those filing tax returns will know that the Inland Revenue no longer exists. It is now Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs. But in the world of architecture, Inland Revenue came to mean the 1994 Castlemeadow campus in Nottingham, designed by Hopkins Architects after a major competition. For Graeme Hood, the director responsible for the site, who has been based there for the past 10 years, the impact of the building still hasn't worn off. 'It is an unusually good building from a government perspective,' he says. 'It is still an impressive site and remains very dramatic' The winning formula for the practice was the seven separate buildings, rather than a single huge one, and routes through the site for the city. Hood likes the variety of the buildings and the way it gives teams their own identity, unlike a 'chunk' of floorplate. 'But the downside is the public right of way through the site; we have to have security on every door.'
