Foster and Partners has more experience than most of city academies. In fact, both architect and client on Folkestone Academy were veterans of the programme. It was Foster's ninth example and the second for the co-sponsor, former Saga chairman Roger De Haan. As the programme's rather worthy successor, Building Schools for the Future, peppered with watered-down academies, rolls out across the country, there are lessons to be learnt about the importance of the sponsor's role and procurement methods.
