The project to build a national theatre may have begun as a 'high concept' but developed into a full-blown saga. From its 19th century origins in proposals like those advanced in 1848 by Effingham Wilson and the forthrightly entitled 'On the desirability of obtaining a national theatre not wholly controlled by the prevailing popular taste' (1878) by the Builder's editor George Godwin, the debate about the creation of a national theatre was long and often acrimonious. In 1937 Sir Edwin Lutyens was invited to design a national theatre on a site opposite the Victoria and Albert Museum.
