Producing an infection-controlled hospital environment that's also vibrant and welcoming, yet has scope for privacy, is a tall order. It's a challenge that Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands was keen to embrace in its design for the Teenage Cancer Trust ward at Birmingham Children's Hospital. The architect has challenged conventional wisdom on ward design and specified products from non-healthcare sectors that nonetheless fulfil the stringent specification. This was exactly the fresh approach the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) was looking for when it embarked on its programme of new wards. With the help of developer Derwent London, which supports the charity as part of its corporate responsibility programme, TCT approached practices with a track record in other design sectors. Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, which had worked on only one healthcare project previously, was chosen for Birmingham.
