'We are an association of 26 farmers, who own a total of 700 ha of farm and forest land. Through the government's drive, we became interested in energy provision and in 2004 built the plant and a 3.5km pipeline in seven months, to supply heat and power to the local community. There are five villages in the area, with a reach to around 15,000 consumers. 'The total cost of the plant was €3M, roughly split into €1M each for the building, the equipment and laying the pipeline. Each farmer paid for a 2% stake in the plant, with the boiler manufacturer having a 24% share in the cooperative. The grant subsidy was €900,000 from both the Upper Austrian regional government and EU renewables subsidy, in terms of feeding in to the grid from microgeneration, the farmer has the right, but not the obligation to deliver power.
