The growing role of aquaculture in ecosystem restoration

Active restoration in aquatic systems is relatively underdeveloped. Aquaculture, often called gardening or artificial/controlled propagation in this context, is increasingly important in the theory and practice of aquatic restoration. This RE-New contribution explores current ideas and examples in restoration aquaculture. Challenges exist, and these must be acknowledged and addressed. As impacts to aquatic systems persist, the next 25 years should see a greater role for aquaculture and seeds planted now will be important to future efforts. Eventually, aquaculture may be linked to aquatic systems restoration just as silviculture has been linked to forest restoration.
