Reflective Learning and Clerical staff at a University College in the Cayman Islands: Implications for Management (An Exploratory Study)

Whilst the concept of reflective learning has been extensively studied in the classroom, its role in business settings has not been the subject of significant research. This paper presents the outcomes of a small research study which focused on reflective learning and its application in a small organization. The main aim of the research was to ascertain the extent to which clerical workers were engaged in reflective learning while on the job and to outline the implications of this occurrence for small business management. A modified version of Valli’s reflective typology was used to guide the research and to aid in achieving the aim. The main research instrument was a comprehensive questionnaire. The findings indicate that clerical staff at the University College predominantly engaged in reflection-on-action, reflection-in-action and personalistic reflective learning on the job.
