This site was originally opened in 1942 during WWII as a RAF OTU station operating Vickers Wellingtons and Avro Ansons. It later became a Bomber Command airfield and was the first RAF station to receive the Vickers Valiant of no. 138 Squadron in 1955. In 1978 the airfield was purchased by British Leyland and became the test centre for Jaguar Land Rover and Aston Martin. In the 1990s the Heritage Motor Centre was built on part of the site and was used to house many historic vehicles, many of them built by British Leyland subsidiary companies.
