This article explores the phenomenon of fundamentalism as it arises in various forms. In attempting to capture universal truth, fundamentalism seeks a principle that existed prior to present time, is greater than any individual, and is absolute, thus creating a field in which the accepted principle is arbitrarily separated from the psychological processes that hold it and carry it forward. The certainty that a belief is an a priori truth creates a safe container that can assist and/or stultify individuation and the collective advancement of knowledge and understanding.
