Intelligent Transport Systems In China

With an investment of 4-5 billion RMB, ITS in China has experienced rapid development. This has enabled China to make significant breakthroughs in some key technologies such as intelligent traffic control, traffic data collection and processing and public transport optimisation. Many applications have been implemented successfully in various environments, improving transport services and bringing positive social, economic and environmental impacts to China, particularly to the ten showcase cities that provide examples to others in ITS enhancement. It is believed that during 2010-2015, China will have completed the large-scale expansion of a national highway network across most major cities. Most of the highways in this national network will form the foundation for widespread implementations of ITS and will be fully compatible and extendable with future demand. It is estimated that the capacity of China's ITS market will reach 10-100 billion RMB. This will provide not only great opportunities to both public and private sectors but also high-level transport services to the public. In summary, ITS has already contributed much to China's rapid development and will continue to benefit China's economy and people in the future.
