Infusing life: restoration of Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw city campus in Karachi

This paper examines the restoration of the city campus of Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw (NED) University of Engineering and Technology. It outlines a case for using this example as a framework for similar projects in the city and relevant locations elsewhere. The NED was founded in 1922 as Prince of Wales Engineering College to facilitate the education and training of local engineering graduates and is one of the oldest institutions in the Indo Pak subcontinent. It was built in Karachi city centre but, following a relocation to a new campus, its usage declined. Late in the 1990s, a re-utilisation of the old campus began. A restoration plan was prepared and implemented under the guidance and supervision of architects from the faculty. NED alumni (who have nostalgic association with the campus) showed keen interest in the restoration. Impediments experienced are described, along with the way in which they were overcome.
