Purpose - This paper aims to look at the utility of Web 2.0 technologies in the context of thernprofession as a whole.rnDesign/methodology/approach - This is an exploratory paper.rnFindings - It is found that in many cases Web 2.0 technologies are appropriate given prudence inrnhow they are used and their transparency to the patron. It was also found that patrons appreciate newrnuses of cutting edge technology as long as traditional library services are not abandoned.rnPractical implications - It is important for libraries to gauge how much time and resources arernexpended on new, cutting edge technologies and evaluate how those resources can be used mostrneffectively. There is no need for libraries to completely reinvent themselves in order to make use ofrnWeb 2.0 technologies; however, there is a lack in the education of librarians on how to make good usernof these technologies.rnOriginality/value - This paper will hopefully assist libraries in taking stock of the currentrnavailability of Web 2.0 services, and think through how those services and technologies could be bestrnused within the context of individual institutions.
