BSkyB holds sway on Freeview multiplex

National Grid Wireless has contractual obligations with BSkyB that prevent it from using technology that could enable up to three new channels on Freeview. The multiplex operator's contracts for transmitting three BSkyB channels, signed before Freeview launched in October 2002, are understood to include clauses that prevent National Grid Wireless (NGW), formerly Crown Castle, from introducing certain compression methods. These include the 64QAM transmission mode, which is used by SDN, another commercial multiplex operator.
