The number of IPTV households across the world will double this year to 10.6 million and is set to reach 38.4 million by 2012, seven times as many as at the end of 2006, according to a new report. Much of growth this year, and for the next couple of years, will come in Europe as incumbent telecommunications operators launch IPTV platforms to stem declining voice and broadband revenues. Despite the strong forecast growth, only 3.1 per cent of the world's television homes are expected to subscribe to an IPTV platform by 2012, according to estimates from Informa Telecoms & Media's new report IPTV: A Global Analysis 3rd edition. This "fairly limited penetration" results from the difficulty in winning customers from established cable, satellite and digital-terrestrial television platforms, says the report by the publisher of New Media Markets. IPTV platforms generated global revenues from subscriptions and video-on-demand (VOD) of US$1.5 billion (£730 million) last year and are forecast to generate US$14.7 billion by 2012, of which US$13.6 billion will come from subscriptions and US$1.1 billion from VOD.
