Confusion among European viewers over high-definition television equipment is preventing the widespread adoption of the technology, leading broadcasters have warned. Despite high awareness levels for high-definition television (HDTV), many consumers still do not know what equipment is needed to receive high-definition broadcasts. "Consumers don't always realise they'll need a receiver and a subscription in order to watch HD content," Seetha Kumar, the BBC's head of HDTV, told delegates at the HDTV 08 conference, organised by Informa. A recent survey by the BBC Trust as part of its assessment of the Corporation's proposal for a high-definition channel (NMM September 19, 2007), which was this week approved, supported this assertion. It concluded that of the 189 people questioned only 41 per cent knew that a set-top box was needed to receive high-definition broadcasts, while 48 per cent were aware of the need for an additional monthly subscription. By contrast, 72 per cent of those asked knew that an HD-ready television set was required. Overall awareness of HDTV stood at 88 per cent. Alvaro Krupkin, head of promotions at Sky Italia, agreed that many consumers did not realise that owning an HD screen was not enough to receive such content.
