Broadcasters fall into line on Ofcom's HDTV plan but manufacturers still harbour concerns

The UK's public-service broadcasters have accepted Ofcom's proposals for launching high-definition television on Freeview using existing capacity but the majority of manufacturers remain against the plan. The communications regulator this week confirmed its plan to facilitate the launch of HDTV on Freeview using the new DVB-T2 transmission and MPEG-4 compression standards in a consultation on upgrading digital-terrestrial television. This followed the announcement that public-service broadcasters the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Five had signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding backing Ofcom and government plans, effectively ending the HDforAll campaign that sought to secure extra spectrum for HDTV on Freeview.
