Virgin Media reviews broadband speed caps and delays IPTV as focus shifts to quality

Virgin Media's new strategy to focus on delivering broadband of higher quality at faster speeds has prompted a review of the controversial speed capping that was introduced earlier this year and a delay in launching IPTV. The so-called "throttling" of particularly heavy users - which affects five per cent of customers - saw broadband speeds reduced by between a quarter and a half between 4pm and midnight (NMM July 27, 2007). But the company, under the stewardship of acting chief executive Neil Berkett, is reviewing the caps. "I'm a bit concerned that we're probably a bit too aggressive. It's a necessary tool in terms of optimising your capital layout but we've got to make sure we've got the right mix," Berkett said.
