Any application that uses wireless communications will, of course, feature an RF transmitter, receiver or transceiver. This device will often have a relatively high active current consumption, commonly above 10 milliamps. However, many of these applications are also expected to run from smaller and smaller batteries, and offer suitably long, user-friendly battery lifetimes.rnThe design of such a system involves a number of inter-related decisions, including the choice of frequency band and protocol, the RF ICs to provide the link, the microcontroller to control the link and the application, and even the power source(s) for the system.
