Anton Dohrn: a life for Science

Anton Dohrn died in 1909, a year that happened to be the centennial of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species. He was a major evolutionary biologist and one of Darwin's most important supporters. His reputation as a biologist, however, has tended to be overshadowed by his success as a scientific organizer and administrator (Fig. 1). The laboratory that he created at Naples was the place where much of late nineteenth and early twentieth century biological research was done, and it has continued to function in the same spirit ever since.
