Lecture 39. The Varieties and Transformations of Speech

As I have said, the processes of mediated cognition are the original genetic form of thinking, somehow hidden, directly woven into practical actions. Later these special actions form an independent class of actions that are distinguished from other, that is, practical actions, by the fact that these actions are subordinate to a cognitive goal. In other words, they are actually cognitive. It is specifically due to their acquiring the status of separate actions that have their own goal, a cognitive rather than an immediately practical one, that their subsequent development as sui generis processes is possible. Specifically, the transformation of these unique actions into internal actions is possible. This raises the question: on what basis do actions turn into an internal process? In keeping with our course plan, it is on this subject that I am supposed to speak today.
