Isabelle Charleux's Temples et monasteres de Mongolie-interieure is a carefully-researched survey of extant Buddhist architecture in Inner Mongolia. The author modestly tells the reader that she seeks to provide a history of buildings with an emphasis on what is original and unique about the architecture of Inner Mongolia. Behind this daunting task is fieldwork in every region of the county, understanding of the building traditions at Mongolia's Chinese and Tibetan borders, knowledge of Lamaist (Buddhist) imagery and iconography, and a concept for successful organisation and presentation of the material. With little more than Aleksej Pozdneev s Mongolia and the Mongols and Chinese studies of selected sites to guide her, Charleux has presented a study of 157 temples and monasteries that can serve as an introduction for the reader who knows little about the topic, and at the same time is a research guide and accurate reference for those with background in this subject or related subjects such as Mongolian studies, Chinese architecture, or Ming-Qing history.
